Google Sucking Up for More Adsense Placement

26 January 2007 – 8:47 am

Got an email yesterday from the Google Adsense team with some great news that one of my sites may be included in their “custom placement packs program”.

Custom placement packs are selections of individually-reviewed sites designed for our largest brand advertisers.

I’m impressed. thank you. *puffs up chest*

We would like to feature your site more frequently in these advertiser packages, but to do so, we need you to place more image and text-enabled medium rectangle ad units (300×250) on your site.

that is, until I talked so some friends, a large percentage of whom got the same email.

I’ll be honest, the site they’re referring to in my email is not exactly what I’d put in front of the “largest brands”. In fact, I lost the domain a few months ago. An “individual-review” would have discovered that.

Rollcall: Did you get this email?

Can anyone confirm that this program is real and carries any benefit?

Or is this a thinly veiled attempt to get their #1 performing ad format above the fold on the maximum number of sites with a little flattery?

If you got the email, you’re not that special. sorry.

  2. I got it, too. I am going to give it a shot to see if I do increase my take, based on this part of the letter:

“These advertisers want to ensure they reach visitors on high quality sites like yours, and are willing to bid more for ads prominently displayed on these sites.”

  4. I got the same email and thought for a moment I was special, oh well.

I believe they were “individually-reviewed” however as they sent the email to the website address, not the one on my adsense account, so I’m a little special then ;-)

I’m still going to give the medium rectangles a try on the site. I currently have a large rectangle above the fold so the change is minor going to medium ones, and the channel data will tell me what works best.

  5. Got that Super Special email too. I did add 300×250 at the top fold and notify them but My site was so special that they don’t even bother replying. I notified them twice yet don’t know if they do received my email.

  6. Am I the only one that had a back and forth conversation with them? Feeling more special every minute ;)

I think they did this to support Windows VISTA launch ad buys. I’ve been running the Vista “WOW” campaign for a couple days now on the 300×250. It’s a video ad that only runs in that size.
