As reported by a number of webmasters in various message boards, Google appears to be going through a major update (major by many people’s definition). While some people are reporing no change at all, others are reporting from 50-100% loss of placement in Google.

As of the writing of this article, some are saying that the update isn’t done yet. In any case, the consistent advise that comes from fellow webmasters and site-owners is, “Don’t Change Anything.” and to sit and wait until the dust settles.

My feeling is that they’ve made some changes to the penalty criteria and sites that previously squeaked through are now caught in penalties like over-optimization and bad linking. The sorts of sites affected indicates that these penalties are algorithmic, and not manual.
