Brush with fame: iJustine

Some talk on Twitter yesterday by @samharrelson and @dtonhaeuser reminded me to go dig up this picture.  I don't remember posting it to anywhere more permanent than Twitter.

This is from a few summers ago, I randomly ran into Justine in NYC at the apple store.  She was there with her sisters.

Fascinating: Philosophy of Cosmology

Sam writes:

I love the idea of examining this idea of a “philosophy of cosmology”…

Form the original article:

What Happened Before the Big Bang? The New Philosophy of Cosmology by The Atlantic: “This question of accounting for what we call the “big bang state” — the search for a physical explanation of it — is probably the most important question within the philosophy of cosmology, and there are a couple different lines of thought about it.”

As a closet philosopher, I love this stuff.

My favorite quote from the article:

Well gee, you're telling me the universe began in some extremely unlikely or improbable state" and you wonder is there any explanation for that. Is there any principle that you can use to account for the big bang state?

Exactly. Something just doesn't feel right about the current "as simple as that" explanation that has at least made it out to the lay person.

Though as soon as I open my mouth about it, I'm instantly over my head.  Thus my "closet" status.

Regardless, this is a fun read.  And he disses on Hawking, which is pretty ballsy.

Best Stop Motion Evar: Super Mario Beads 2

Stop motion is so awesome.

By the way, the characters in this video were made with "Perler Beads".  It's a tedious job to put these together for anyone with hands larger than a 6 year-old's.

As a father with kids who love making things with these beads, all I can say to these guys is, "respect".  Must have been a bitch making all these props -- unless they've got a sweatshop of 4 year olds with tiny hands putting these together.

This video makes me want to go get my kids' plastic iron beads and make my own.

Crushing Nor'easter October 2011

This is the morning after the big Nor'easter that came through the northeast last night.

Massive damage everywhere.

A few years ago we had a similar issue which I wrote about here

The ice storm cometh

While we had some major damage outside to our cars and property, were lucky in some ways. People all around us lost power, which we managed to avoid.
