The Ice Storm Cometh

posted by jangro on (3 years, 5 months ago)

Last night in New England we got a massive ice storm. According to reports there are hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power this morning.

We've been without power for six hours now. I drove around in it this morning and there is no power for miles around. We could be in for a long outage here.

Thankfully, I got us set up with a gas generator a few years ago, fully expecting to never need it. Bitter sweet redemption.

We had some pretty major damage here at the Jangro homestead. We heard the crashing limbs all night coming down with a crack, whoosh, thud. Thankfully, the house and cars wheren't hit. Or the power line to the house. Clean up is really going to be a drag. There are dozens of chainsaw worthy branches all over the yard.

Here are some highlights.

Front yard, massive tree lost a whole side of its limbs.

Nooo, not my new fence!

The fence post cap ended up like 30 feet away.

This gives you a pretty good idea how thick the ice was on the pine needles. Enough to snap huge limbs.

If you'll excuse me, I need to go buy some more gasoline.

Scott - sorry about your fence and yard, but glad that all the Jangros are safe and sound.

Now - i'm off to buy a generator.

Man i feel sorry to be your fence man, but those are really nice photos you have taken. hope we can see a sign of no more bad weather.

Ouch, I bet you're very upset and frustrated when you're found out about the fence, Scott. I felt sorry for it as well!

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear of your damage. Living in the UK, we don't get ice storms (or at least VERY rarely.) Hope the clean up isn't too much of a pain for you.

Sorry to hear about your fence. Here in eastern Ontario we tend to get hit like that once and a while. A good way to get rid of all that junk is to just burn it. If you have a fireplace, that's ideal. If not check with your city's bylaws about backyard fires. Roast some marshmallows and try to find some sort of upside from nature's little stints like these.

Wow, you guys got hit real hard! Suddenly buying a generator seems like a very good idea. I am presuming the 7500 watt unit in the picture above is enough to power the Jangro homestead?

Out of curiosity... What happened to Disqus?

  • Posted by Scott Jangro 3 years, 5 months ago

Hey Vlad. I'd say it could have powered the entire house, but I didn't. Just the important stuff like heat, water, fridge and a few lights. oh, and internet/computers. ;)

I removed Disqus to see what the wordpress 2.7 upgrade did for comments. I'm not sure if I'm going to put it back. I don't really like how the few posts with hundreds/thousands of comments is handled.

I'm forced to page those comments, and the Disqus paging leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm thinking of giving IntenseDebate another try to see how that does. I'm waiting on feedback from them on how they'll do with a post with 1600 comments.

    Thanks Scott,

I did update several blogs of mine to 2.7 but kept the Disqus. It would be good to hear your feedback on IntenseDebate once you give the a closer look.

Good luck with clean up. Had you live closer I would bring my chain saw- love to do this kind of work.

OK, we're on ItenseDebate now. I like it so far.

I had some good fun with my chainsaw yesterday. LOTS more work to do.

Intense debate looks good, is it a JavaScript?

Posted by Scott Jangro 3 years, 5 months ago

Nosir, not Javascript. It is a wordpress plugin with all the comments in the code. That was the biggest hangup I had with it a year or so ago when I took my first look.

Tried to reply to this message via e-mail before completely setting up the account with them. I really like it. Wonder about spam, would be good if I can continue to use Spam Karma.

Scott, what version of the plugin are you testing the beta or the stable?

After seeing these photos I'm glad we don't have ice storms in Utah. I think I would rather have 2 feet of snow in my driveway!

[...] The past few winters have been in the “worst-ever” category for ice damage to homes and properties here in New England, with the ice storm of 2008 capping it off. [...]
