Samsung DLP Frequent Questions

posted by jangro on (5 years, 9 months ago)

Since I posted a few how-to articles on repairing Samsung DLP televisions, I get a lot of email about the subject.

I'm not a TV repair-man (well I guess I am now technically, but not by trade) and I cannot offer professional advice, but that's never stopped me before!

Here are a few questions that are representative of what I've been getting.

"I have a samsung dlptv which I replaced the lamp with no problem. The tv works but the color is messed up. What do you think is the matter? Of course, our warranty expired."

My response to this (which is, by no coincidence, the same response my family all gets when their computers aren't working) was to "reboot" the television. To do this, you must actually unplug it from the wall. Televisions and other electronic devices don't actually power down completely when you turn off the power switch. Unplug it (after powering it off and waiting for the fan to stop!), wait a few minutes, plug it back in, turn it on.

I'm happy to report that author of the above question wrote back to me and the problem was resolved by unplugging the set. She also said she unplugged the cable box, so maybe the problem was there. Who knows. Doesn't matter. It's fixed.

"How do you reset the lamp hours counter?" and "How do you get into the service menu?"

I don't know if the service menu is a big secret or not, but since I'm not the first to publish this, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

From Extremetech.com:

For those inclined to get into service mode on Samsung DLP TVs, simply turn your system off, then use the remote and press the following buttons with about .5 to .75 seconds delay between presses: MUTE-1-8-2-POWER.

Once in the service menu, select the bottom item, Options, and from there you can reset the lamp counter.

I've never played with any of these settings. I'd strongly caution against any "curiosity tweaks" in there.

I turn on the set, it tries to turn on the lamp, but gives up after several attempts and several seconds. Finally it ends up with three blinking lights

I think the most common cause of this problem is a faulty lamp. If you have replaced the lamp, or otherwise have reason to believe that it is not the lamp, it may be the ballast (the thing that starts up the lamp). You can purchase a ballast at a good price at MCM Electronics.com.

Well, my dad has taken the old bulb out of the TV I mentioned about earlier, so now it's just a matter of time before we order the new one from Samsungparts.

Is it okay that we did this early?

TV Model: Samsung DLP 43" (HLN4365W)
    Bought: April 2004

The set was working perfectly for more than 2 years but suddenly I start getting a blinking message that says "Check fan No. 2"
The image is still fine but the message does not go away. I read some messages in internet forums that advise dusting/vacuming the fans, in case they are stuck because of dust build-up. I unplugged everything, did that and the TV was working fine for a few hours until I turned it off. The next time I turned it back on the message reappeared.

Then I opened the cover again and held the safety lever in place with a piece of tape (to be able to turn on the TV without the cover), powered up the TV and in a couple of minutes the message "Check fan No. 2" reappeared exactly when the fan stopped spinning. I was thinking it could be the fan but it could also be the board that controls this fan since the fan spins normally for a awhile and then stops.

Has anyone encounter this error? How do I solve it? Will replacing the fan do the trick?

    Thanks in advance

I have a 4 year old samsug dlp HLN5065W. The problem I have is after an hour of watching the tv starts flasing all over the picture slow at first then faster the longer its on. Anyone have this problem or know whats wrong ?

  • Posted by Rick 5 years, 6 months ago

I have the same problem as Glenn. I too have a HLN5065W. After 45 minutes to an hour, when ever there is any white in the picture, there are white static like flashes across the screen. It happens less frequently when there is a dark picture. This happened to me last year about this time as well. I blew all the dust out but that didn't help. I then put a fan near the air vents by the the lamp on the left side and forced air through the back. It seemed to help for a while. Then it stopped helping. I purchased and was going to install a more powerful exhaust fan for the lamp but the connector was not right. I was about to take in it for service, but it magically started working again. Since it has only happened in the winter, could it be related to humidity? We use a pellet stove to heat our house and it is dry.

I have problem with fan #2. I replaced a new fan, but it still does same thing. Fan span for a few seconds and stops.I have 50" dlp samsung.
    Anyone has any idea ?

  • Posted by JJ 5 years, 5 months ago

I have the exact same proplem as reno. I have #hlm507w 50" about 3 years old now. They replaced color wheel 2 times under warranty. now it's out of warranty and it crashes constantly and leaves a white imprint with black background. you have to unplug it to turn off and reset. then it works for awhile and does it again. Great picture when it works. any body have any clues?

My hlm507w had fan #2 blinking; I replaced a new fan;I cannot turn on TV at all. Then I replaced lamp and ballast; it still cannot turn on TV. There is a blink on temperature. anyone has any clues. Could be a board that control fan ?

  • Posted by Thomas Anderson 5 years, 4 months ago

Also, my dad's TV (SLJ402W 40" Samsung) does the following: 1. Turn on the tv 2. Wait a bit more than half a minute for it to initialize, in which it makes some sounds in the back of the TV. 3. Then I get all three of the front panel LED's blinking for a supposedly infinite amount of time!

According to Samsung's manual for this TV set, it is indeed a faulty lamp problem.

I am likely just part of the "three blinking lights club". But does anyone know if there is an exception to this case? My dad said he would get the lamp/bulb whenever he gets the money (hopefully soon!!) so I would like to know if this is what my dad needs to do. Thanks all!

i have a hlp4663 that hums loudly. the humming continues for a few seconds after it's turned off. i've disconnected fan #2, but humming still there.if it's the color wheel the noise should stop with the picture right? i'm normally pretty handy with these types of things, but i dont' want to tear apart my favorite appliance for fun. I'm thinking lamp #3 is the culprit but i cant find it. any help will be appreciated. thanx

I've got a 46" Samsung DLP that is about 2 years old. Since day one of purchasing this machine, it has not started up properly. A Samsung tech told me it's the lamp, even though I don't have anywhere near the number of hours it is suppossed to be able to last, on the TV. A Circuit City employee told me it is probably the Color Wheel... It goes through what seems to be a warm-up cycle and then I get various blinking lights--typically two green and one red--then NO picture (got sound). Sometimes it finally "launches" and I get a picture, and sometimes it doesn't. I love the fact I spent over $3 grand on this thing...! What a poorly engineered television!

I have a samsung HLN-4365 since 8/2003 I have had it lock up in a negative style image that was fixed by replacement of the digital board. noe it is doing the flashing thing others are talking about what causes this?

I've got a HLP4663WX/XAA and it bleeds green very badly, especially where the picture is dark. Does anyone know if this is a lamp or color wheel problem? Any advice is much appreciated!

  • Posted by Rick 5 years, 3 months ago

I posted previously about our HLN5065W with a flashing problem. A technician came to our home and started off by replacing the DMD board. That didn't help. He took it back to the shop and they ended up putting in a new Color Wheel and a new LDVS cable. It was then adjusted, cleaned, and tested. All is well now.

  • Posted by glenn 5 years, 3 months ago

Kendall the flashing problem is the color wheel. You can fix it yourself for about $150.00 or have it fixed for about $450.00. You can get step by step instuctions at
http://www.jangro.com/items/samsung-dlp-replace-color-wheel/. Rick did you get a free DMD board out of the deal?Hope everything is working well now. Good luck Kendall

I have an HLP4663WX/XAA. The set will just shut off randomly. We'll turn the set back on & eventually will shut off randomly again. Any words of wisdom?

Posted by Barry Erick 3 years, 4 months ago

This is the safety switch at the DLP Lamp cover. Simply open the cover and exercize the switch several times. After sitting in the same position for a while, the switch gains high resistance. Also, the switch must point DOWNWARD. If the cover is put on by tilting it in, it'll be correct. If just pushing the cover in, the switch can tilt up and as the set heats, will move just enough to trip and turn the set off.

I have two Samsung DLP tvs… a HLN4365W that I bought first and a 56 inch (I don’t know the model number off the top of my head, but its a 3rd or 4th gen chip) and I love them both. Great tvs for the money, IMO.

I recently moved the HLN4365W and the picture no longer looks aligned to me… it looks slightly trapesoidal (wider at the bottom). I looked in the manual to see if there is any sort of adjustment that can be made through menus, but I found nothing.

Its this an easy problem to fix by realigning the projector?

I have an extended warranty, so I could call for a repair, but if its a known easy fix I’ll crack open the back of the TV and do it myself.

    Any info would be appreciated.

Help! Have a HLN467W. Turn it on, light blinks and then it sounds like a circular saw. You can't turn it off until the lights stop blinking, then the picture comes on, and color is fine (so it shouldnt be the color wheel). There is no error message, just the godawful noise. Tweeter told us that you can't buy just a replacement bulb or fan, but it is now one unit. any suggestions are appreciated

Please HELP me! I just recently bought a 46" samsung hlp4663w on ebay. The previous owner said he had it checked out and it needs a new digital micro mirror. Do you know how much this part will cost? Any ball park idea on what it would cost to have it replaced by a tech? Is it something I could do myself?

    Hi,

I have just purchased Samsung "42" Plasma TV. The main Problem with TV is its DNIE DEMO automatically turns on. After watching it for few hours the screen will go black, however sound can still be heard. Can you please tell what is the exact problem.

I'm asking this to confirm if partstore.com is reputable or not, as I cannot at the time find reviews of the site itself.

Posted by Scott 5 years, 1 month ago

Tom, I've purchased several times from Partstore and had no problems.

  • Posted by Tom Anderson 5 years, 1 month ago

Hi all, we did go ahead and buy the lamp (bulb) for the TV I mentioned about earlier! (SLJ402W Samsung TV)

It was from Partstore.com' href='http://Partstore.com">Partstore.com'>http://Partstore.com">Partstore.com rather than from Samsungparts.com.

    Was' href='http://Samsungparts.com">Samsungparts.com.

    Was'>http://Samsungparts.com">Samsungparts.com.

Was this site we bought from a good pick? Or is there a lot of buyers from there that have had bad shipping/purchasing experiences?

Well, we're getting the new lamp (bulb) today so all hopes are high.

Will try it and report on this forum success or failure

HI ive had this unit for over 12 months now wich was actually a replacement unit after having many problems with the original LCD unit wich showed me that SAMSUNG really dont give a rats about service just SALES so after 3 months without a tv and threatening them with a call to fair trading and consumer affairs Samsung finally came around my way and decided to replace it with a SP61L3HXX/XSA DLP model ,12 months later and out of warranty the unit turns on and i get a perfect bright picture for about 30 seconds to 1 minute then off again it just keeps repeating this ,I contacted Samsung again and they basically told me to suck eggs so I am writing to you guys to see if this is a problem you might have come across as i figure its not a globe issue due to the fact that it boots up with a great picture but then click and it goes off and back on again and it is also supposed to flash the LEDs when the globe is gone could anonyone suggest anything that may help ,could it be the ballast and has anyone seen the thread that suggests giving the unit a good hit on the back any help you could give me in reguards to this would be of great help Thank You NATHAN HILL

I replaced the bulb and it was still flashing after an hour or so of use. I pulled lamp, cleaned it up (it was really black dirty), re-seated the lamp and works much better now. However, still a little flashing after an hour or so of use. Is next step to replace the Color Wheel? What is LDVS cable and should I bother replacing that too? Dave S.

I'm having problems with a 50' Samsung HLM 507W. It shut down and when it came back on there was only a B/W picture. Lost all color. What should I look at first? Thanks.

  • Posted by Bruce 5 years ago

I just boughta new samsung DLP and noticed the picture was a light brighter than my old one (Model HLM507W). The bulb has about 6200 hours on it. Can I brighten the picture back up by replacing the bulb or should I replace the color wheel (it is quiet) or bith?

Which bulb do I buy? The OEM one or the Phillips upgrade, but I will have to buy the matching ballast.

    Thanks

  • Posted by Bruce 5 years ago

I just purchased a new Samsung DLP and when compared to my older one (Model HLM507W) the newer one has a MUCH brighter picture. The bulb in the old one has 6200 hours. By replacing the bulb, should I expect the picture to be a lot brighter? Should I also replace the color wheel at the same time (it is not making any noise)?

Also, which replacement bulb do I get? The OEM replacement or Phillips which will require a new Balast I understand.

    Thanks

I have a samsung 52" DLP tv. The three standy/lamp/ and another light started flashing indicating that the lamp is bad. I purchased a new lamp and installed it. When I try to turn on the TV, I hear a click like it's turning on, then a few seconds later I hear a little chime and the lamp button on the front flashes and then about 15 seconds later I hear the same chime and the lamp flashes again. After it does this several times all three lamps light up. The bulb never turns on during any of this. I checked all connections and there are no loose wires etc. Any suggestions?

I have a problen with my Samsung 61 inch DLP that was bought new at CC in 06. Once in awhile the left half of screen will show flickering. It looks very much like how a computer crt monitor flickers when the refresh is set too low. Usually turning off the the tv for a moment and turning it back on fixes it. I was thinking it might be the bulb (3400 hours on it) but why would it only flicker on left half of screen though? Any thoughts?

I just finished replacing the color wheel on my hln617w. when I tried restarting the lamp it wouldn't light up(It was workng). Any reassembly problem that you know of that could cause this malfunction?

  • Posted by johnny rich 4 years, 11 months ago

have a HLN5065NX, had to change the color wheel myself after 2 years and now have the black and white problem i’ve read about. TV turns on ok but after a while picture goes black with white pixels of last frame and then the three blinking lights (two green one red) go on.

i’ve read it could be the lamp, faulty fan(s) or faulty DMD. don’t know which one’s the problem on my set but i did notice that the air flow at the back of the TV is not as strong as it used to be so i’m thinking it’s an overheating problem. just like a computer if the components overheat weird stuff starts happening.

i’m going to replace the fans and give the TV a air cleaning. I’ll post my results.

great site BTW Scott, i had documented and taken pictures of the last time i changed my color wheel and had planed on posting something similar but you bet me to it. great job, must have saved many people lots of coin!

I have a 50" Samsung DLP about 2-3 years old. It just started to have a white dot on the screen in upper left side. I took the back off and vacuumed all dust and lamp but the dot is still there. Any help??

How can I tell if it is the lamp, the ballast or the color wheel. Picture is blank. Sound comes on for a minute or so. Lamp flashes a couple times when I look in the access panel bu does not stay on. I turns off and then comes back on to try again and the same thing happens. I am unable to turn off the TV without unplugging it. I am happy to replace whichever one it is, but unsure which. I have had an off and on whining noise which is probably the color wheel. But, there was some dimmness of picture in th last 2 days.

    HELP!

    Mike
