Replacing a DLP Lamp -- Just the Bulb

posted by jangro on (3 years, 11 months ago)

Many DLP televisions, and particularly the Samsung brand TVs, the replacement lamp is a lamp with a large enclosure. I wrote a post a few years ago on how to replace the entire DLP lamp unit.

Over the months, I've had many, many people ask me about whether it's a good idea to just change out the lamp itself in these units. More and more online stores are making these available.

Until now, I haven't really been able to answer that question. But recently, I've had the opportunity to test it out.

I'm happy to say that the procedure is very easy, and since I've been running one of these lamps in my television for a few weeks now, the picture quality is very good.

Instead of doing my typical cookbook procedure with pictures, I thought I'd do a video.

If you want to buy a replacement lamp, you can get them from these partner sites:

I have a question about my zenith dlp rear projection. We were watching it over the weekend and all of a sudden it shut it's self off. I've gone through the owners guide and looked at the trouble shooting and it said that when the red light is flashing next to the light bulb icon that "there's a problem with the lamp or around it" is this just a way of saying that the bulb needs to be replaced ???? If so I will just but another one and replace it without having to go through a repair shop that has already told me that it's going to cost me $300.00 to look at it plus parts and labor. Your video (which I did watch was VERY HELPFUL) should me what i need to do. If you could help with this I would greatly appreciate it. Again Thank you for you time and effort and VERY HELPFUL insight..

Hi, your video was great. We ordered the lamp only and it came right away. My husband put it in and plugged the TV in and turned and wa la we had beautiful picture and sound. Went away for the weekend and came home and I noticed the green timer light on top was on. We tried to turn the tv on and nothing happened. When we tried to turn it on the timer light flashes then goes away. What do you think?

Ok, got it fixed. Just unplugged everything for a few minutes and plugged it back in hit the on button and it came on beautifully.
    Thanks for all the help.

I have the Samsung HLR5667. I had to replace the lamp about 2 months ago. Now the color whee was replaced, by me, today. The noise stopped but the tv will only stay on 5 seconds and then goes out with the front panel light "Lamp" flashing with High Temperature". I my have put the larger fan in wrong...backwards or upside down. Is there any way to tell for sure how it goes in??It is the larger fan in front of the color wheel that seems to cool the lamp. There is writing on it..model number etc. Does this writing got in where it can't be seen, or outwards and in what position? Help?? Thanks! Debbie

nice video Scott....have some tips for folks, trial & error, I am novice!
have samsung HLS 4266wx DLP TV, 18 months old, newer than one in your slide demo.----a few days ago tv had picture for 1or2 minutes then mess. that Fan#2 problem & lose picture. In newer DLPs (samsung) fan#2 is very hard to get to in front unlike older models in back but one thing to be aware of is there are 3 screws that when removed allow guts to slide out to get to fan, not necessary for lamp replacement though. Had to have perfect screw driver(phillips) to get to fan.....too small or too big won't work or fat as well, that was biggest problem&remembering order disassembled. writng on fan should be facing you at back of tv with wires at bottom & looped up halfway thru slot in plastic casing for fan. Whatever people do, do not touch front of lamp when working on any part of tv, made that mistake & now have to replace lamp, simple though costly. also should have tv turned off for approx. 6-8 hours so tv discharges fully before working on it.

Found it to be $27.00 cheaper & faster from samsungparts.com' href='http://samsungparts.com">samsungparts.com'>http://samsungparts.com">samsungparts.com than partstore.com
    for' href='http://partstore.com">partstore.com
    for'>http://partstore.com">partstore.com
for lamp assemb. & fan was about $3.00 cheaper & faster with samsung using 2 day shipping for each. Lamp @samsungparts.com was $150.00 without shipping which they give you several options, I took 2 day for total of $173.17 as opposed to
200.00 with 5-6 day [email protected].

hope this can be helpful to some folks! Good luck!

PS-----------also have to unscrew that thick cable on left hand side by unscrewing
plastic screws on each side of cable tip to allow the guts to slide out even further to access fan as well as remove black plastic component in front of fan, nearest you. Fan#2 is located at front toward screen on right side of tv, back to front-no side access.

I am trying to replace the color wheel for my Samsun DLP #HLP 4663. I am having trouble finding the 2 brass screws I need to lsen to pull out the entire unit. When I look at your picture of the process I see a different arangement in the back of my TV. There is a large circuit chasis in front of the bulb unit preventing me from locatig the 2 brass screws. Does the chasis need to be removed first? If so how is this done? Taks for any help you may have on this.

I have an RCA HD DLP big screen and the other night it made about three pop sounds with in about two hours. I really didn't think anything about it until I was in my bedroom and heard (it sounded like a light bulb shattered) looked at my tv and it had sound and no picture. I opened the bulb door to find pieces of glass all inside this area of the tv. Does it sound like I just need a new bulb or is it something more? Any help woul be appreciated.

    Thanks, Michael

Thank you for this clip! We have a JVC DLP we purchased early 2006. Started getting message about lamp needing to be changed back in 6/11 and although saw no diminishing of functioning just figured we would change lamp so our TV viewing would not be interrupted. Priced lamp and housing unit and felt let's try to just buy lamp (purchased online for about $60/lamp only). We kept waffling over if we should even try then I decided to get a couple of my girlfriends over (we are all middle-aged with kids in high school). Although our set is different it only took us 10 minutes this morning (1/12). Watching your clip helped us prepare for this task and I cannot say how FUMING I am that Best Buy Geek squad was going to charge $150 just to install lamp bulb I had purchased. This task is simple to accomplish if you just take your time and follow directions.
