Sorry for diluting the "Ice Storm Post"...
Just installed the Intense debate on my blog. Hard to tell if I like it better than Disqus. My growing concern with Disqus was spam. Looks like IntenseDebate might have better sync options with WordPress.
At least we have several great options and alternatives.
no worries on the ice storm post.
I had been getting more Disqus spam as well. I think that's probably because they're getting more popular and therefore more targeted.
IntenseDebate is probably heading there as well.
Check out the ID settings in your dashboard. They'll run comments through Akismet as well as their own spam algo. Interesting stuff.
Splitter!
But seriously, I'll be interested to get your feedback and see how well things get integrated. I've got a few wordpress.com blogs that I keep waiting to try ID with, so hopefully they'll flip that switch soon.
Can you reply by email, etc as in Disqus?
Yes, I'm replying via email to this post. There's more of a lag than on Disqus. Takes several minutes for an email reply to post.
So far, integration is well done. I'm impressed with how far they've come.
The comments are still sync'ing, so the jury's out on that process.
Hey Scott,
You're right about the increase in spam being due to the increase in our distribution. We've made a lot of changes recently to address these spam attacks and it's been successful so far.
We know where we can improve the most here and we'll be showing off these improvements shortly. When that comes, hopefully you'll give Disqus a second chance. :)
Thanks -
Daniel
Scott,
Solution needed. On my sageblogger.com, the trackbacks are intermixed with the rest of the comments. I remember you did something to separate each when you started to use Disqus.
I just recently learned how to separate them in WordPress default comments.php file.
It would be good idea to have the feature as a part of the plugin. Personally I think every developer plugins or themes guys should separate trackbacks/pingback from the rest of the comments. Should be a standard feature.
Thanks in advance.
This is the second IntenseDebate recommendation I'd seen in as many days - given I've a new blog which I couldn't make disqus look nice with I thought I'd give ID a chance.
A big advantage ID has over Disqus is that you can customise the look and feel more easily. However, I really do miss the 'recent comments' wordpress (gravatar) widget and am surprised its taken ID this long to come up with a better alternative to their JavaScript horror.
Just stopping by to see if IntenseDebate dropped by to see this thread. Maybe they will in the future. I just noticed that replying to a comment from your e-mail client works only for the owner of the blog. But the notification e-mail about some one replying to a comment contains that statement that you can reply by sending the e-mail even if you are not the owner of the blog.
I am not sure if it is only me, but I am not able to to reply to comments from e-mail unless I am the owner of the blog. Does any one else experienced this?
Many noticed that I removed the Disqus comment service last week. I did that primarily because I upgraded to Wordpress 2.7 and wanted to get a feel for what Wordpress was doing with comments recently.
That said, my loyalty to Disqus is waning because of how they handle my few posts with a large number of comments. I have one post with more than 1500 comments, and after upgrading to the newest Disqus wordpress plugin that imported all old comments, that post was causing Internet Explorer to hang.
Enabling Disqus' paging resolves the problem, but I don't love their paging implementation. There is just prev and next links with no ability to jump around, or to the end. That's a real problem when there are dozens and dozens of pages.
I love the guys at Disqus, their responsiveness and how engaged they are with the community. But business is business and I need to look at other solutions.
I was actually enjoying being back on Wordpress comments for a few days, but decided this would be a great time to test out IntenseDebate again. I took a good hard look at IntenseDebate vs. Disqus almost a year ago and the big show-stopper was that it was Javascript only. That meant that comments were not visible to search engines.
Since then, they've made huge strides, in addition to being bought up by Automattic (Wordpress) and have released a Wordpress plugin that gets the comments sync'ed with Wordpress and serves them up server-side.
It's interesting that I rarely see IntenseDebate in our Social Media and Internet Marketing circles. It's all Disqus.
Well here's one brick in the wall for IntenseDebate.
