Step 5. Remove the bad convergence chips. Turn over the board and identify the pins that are for the convergence chips. Using a soldering iron and the wick, sandwich the wick between the hot iron and the connection points. The old solder will be absorbed into the wick.
Step 6. Put the new chips in, in the right direction of course, and solder them into place. Be careful not to short any pins. The solder in place should look like a little hershey kiss. Before putting the new chip in, spread thermal compound on the back of each, which sticks it to the heat sink.
Step 7. Put the television back together and test.
Note: If this process does not fix the problem, you will want to check the resistors that are next to the convergence tips.
You know your projection television has a convergence problem if your colors don't line up, and seem like double-vision.
Step 1. Open your television and remove the board that has the convergence chips on it. There are typically two convergence chips, and they're identified as two pretty big chips that have heat sinks on them.
Step 2. Cue up an awesome Ben Folds track ("You Don't Know Me").
Step 3. Remove any clamps that are holding the chips to the heat sink.
Step 4. Identify the model number of your convergence chips.
After identifying what convergence chips you need, head online to buy them. Here's one quality place to purchase: MCM Electronics.
Tools Required: Soldering iron, thermal compound, solder, wick/desoldering braid.
