My genius husband already came up with this solution for me! The battery kept falling off my Droid as well. Pulling it out of my pocket, pulling it our of my purse, or just talking on the phone for that matter. I was ready to take it back... then my husband folded a TJ Maxx price tag in half, placed it over the battery, put the cover back on and it hasn't come off since!! Yay!

the phone crashing 2x during it's first week of use, I love it! I
haven't really sat down to learn all the features and everything yet,
but I've figured out how to use Facebook, Twitter, check my email and
instant message with gtalk. I feel so savvy! lol I had a Razr for 3
years so this a huge learning curve and improvement over my last phone.
I haven't figured out how to put my own wallpaper on the phone yet
though...

I was doing yard work today, moving back and forth into the woods behind my house, and on coming inside, noticed that my Droid's battery cover was off. My response was, "Oh great...and good luck finding it in the woods and brush! I hope I can order a replacement!"
Well, I got lucky and found the cover. FWIW, I've had a several Motorola phones in the past (the Razr and my wife/kids other Moto models and all but one had a loose cover problem. I'll apply this "paper insert" solution on one of the loose non-Droid phones and see if it helps! (Fire warning understood, although I think it wildly unlikely).
I'm also ordering a replacement cover via Motorola's offer to replace them. When the replacement cover comes in, I'll use one of my micrometers to see if the pad in the back is any thicker!

Yes- Holden, MA!!! I actually bicycle to Stow and back in nice weather-
it's about a 60 mile round trip by bicycle. Plus my boss lives in Stowe.
We both work at MITRE Corporation in Bedford.
I just contacted Moto about the replacement. They're sending one off to me
asap. Thanks so much that advice. I bet there's something very thin and
nonflammable that can be used besides paper..I'm thinking a very, very thin
sheet of metal, maybe.
Had a scare last night, though, when I noticed that the cover was gone. I
was working outside all afternoon (still cleaning up some remanents of last
year's infamous ice storm!) and that's where the cover must have fallen
off. Luckily, after some searching with a flashlight, I found that it fell
off in my driveway and not in the woods behind my house. It was after I
found the cover that I googled a search for fixing the cover and came across
your website.
FWIW, this is my fifth Motorola product. Love their products, but they
indeed do have a historical issue with battery covers falling off. One of
my kids' Moto phones has this problem, and my old Moto RAZR (that my wife
now has) had the issue when I used the super size battery covery.
Tell you what- when I get a replacement cover, I'll use one of my old
fashioned micrometers to measure the thickness between the two covers and
post the results to your blog. GREAT blog, BTW.
The Droid is a great phone, BTW. I recently ran a wire from my car's
fusebox directly to underneath the car mount (see

worry about the battery wearing down while using the GPS and at the same
time don't run some curly cord to the dash's 12 volt adapter.
It does some ways to go, though! When the Droid is on the car mount, calls
still come in via portrait mode. Kinda goofy. I actually have a list of
little things like that that I should post somewhere.

That's a great mod on your car. (Is that a Volvo dash?)
With a Holden-Bedford commute, I can see you spending some effort on a droid/car integration. I used to do Worcester-Burlington, now I have zero commute.
And I wouldn't expect anything less from a MITRE engineer. Assuming you're an engineer. You do own a micrometer after all. ;)
There are surely some annoyances with the Droid. I've got several of my own, which I'll be posting here soon.

My Motorola Droid phone has a problem. The battery cover is too loose. The combination of a loose cover, rubberized backing on the phone, and my pocket means the cover frequently falls off.
I've seen a number of discussions in Droid forums about this, so I know I'm not alone.
Here's a very simple solution that I'm using on my own Moto Droid. The cover hasn't fallen off since.
And a little scotch tape makes it "permanent"...
UPDATE: Motorola will send you a replacement Droid battery cover.
