180Solutions Come Clean or Smoke Screen?

Has 180 turned a 180? Last month, MediaPost reported on 180's campaign to inform all consumers who receive adware from the company that they have ad-serving software installed on their computers. Wayne Porter, a 180Solutions and spyware critic (to say the least), doesn't seem to be convinced of the sincerity.

Now according to this news story, 180solutions Announces Settlement of Lawsuit Claims Against Internext Media.

180 is actually suing a publisher for not conforming to their "code of conduct", preventing silent installations of their software. They've settled with Aztec Marketing with no admission of wrongdoing from that party.

To encourage strong policing efforts, 180solutions will place all monies received from this litigation and other enforcement measures into a fund to foster pro-consumer practices for downloadable software. An initial grant from the fund is being made to the Center for Democracy and Technology in recognition of its work on this case.

I wonder how the CDT feels about this?

It's been said, the best defense is a good offense. Seems to me that they're kicking the dog.
