Yesterday I tested myself.
All my life, I’ve never done this, though it’s always been on my list of things that I want to do. Just one of those things.
It may not seem like a big deal, but after 41 years (to the day, thank you), I’ve become pretty attached to my hair. Nothing crazy, I’m no Sam “Mayday” Malone, but this is the hair I’ve got, and it’s been sticking with me even as I enter my fifth decade.

jangro I’m thinking of shaving my head. (buzz, not bald) Should I do it? 2009-01-27 10:58:12 – Reply – View Tweet – Retweet – Direct Message |
As you’ll hear in the video, it occurred to me that few things in my life have made me as nervous as going under the clippers.
That’s pretty significant. But why? In the grand scheme of things, it really shouldn’t rank up there. And really what was the risk? That I’d look bad? Worst case scenario I have to wear a baseball hat for a few months.
Even so, it was pretty nerve wracking.
With the encouragement (sincere, I’m sure) of several guys on twitter, and in spite of a few women discouraging the act (thanks for the support, ladies), I put fear aside and went through with it.
The point here has nothing to do with a silly haircut, but that I did something that I was very uncomfortable with.
And it turned out ok. Though I’ll let you be the judge of that.
More importantly, what are you putting off doing something because of fear?
- Speaking in public?
- Starting a blog?
- Making a video podcast?
(while you’re walking down the street in a busy town? Which was also a little scary.) - Getting out of a job you’re sick of?
- Speaking out on an important issue?
- Doing what you really want to do with your career?
- Changing your hair style?
Don’t be a chicken.
Whatever it is, don’t let fear of failure or a bad outcome stop you. No matter how it turns out, you’ll be better for it.
My birthday gift to you, whether it makes you laugh or gives you a little inspiration, watch the video…
