OK here is my problem. I bought a Samsung HLP6163WX set back in Dec. 2004. Thank god I bought the extended warrenty. This set has broke down twice in the last 4 years and is starting to act up again. The set is still under warrenty till Dec. 09 but if you read the fine print the bulb changes are only covered for the first 3 years. Here is what it is doing now. When powering up the set it now takes several minutes for the screen to reach full brightness and it seems to dim down just a little with in the first minute of turning on. Is this a Bulb or a ballast problem? The TV has some time on it so I figure I need to change the bulb anyways. I figure I will start with the bulb and go from there. If anyone has experienced this problem as well and was able to address it please let me know.

Thanks,

Bryan

That sounds very much like a bad bulb (IMO).  If it was the ballast, I would imagine you'd be seeing more inconsistent/intermittent behavior with the image (flickering, etc), but it seems like the ballast is firing up the lamp properly and maintaining a level of brightness, even though that level seems low.

You can get new lamps fairly cheap these days (they're not $300 like they used to be!).  Regardless of your fine print, I would still make a call to the extended warranty provider and ask that they get you a new lamp.  It's entirely possible they'll just do it out of good faith … I've seen stranger things happen.  Worst case, they say no. :)
