I'm going to guess that it's neither, but only based on thinking about it, not experience.

If the lamp was going, it could be flickering, but I can't see how that would cause ghosting.  On my TV, I can see the lamp glow come out the back of the set.  Can you look at that while it is flickering and see if the lamp is doing anything?

That said, except for the cost, it certainly wouldn't hurt to try a new lamp.  At the very least, you end up with a backup which is important to have onhand.

The color wheel going usually manifests itself as noise as the bearings wear down.  I can't see how that would cause flickering.

So what is it?  My first guess would be the DMD board, which is bad news because it's expensive ($300-400) and I have no experience changing it.  But that's a guess.  Hopefully someone else will chime in.
