Samsung DLP – How to Replace Fan #2

by Scott Jangro on 29 September 2006

You turn on your Samsung DLP and get a blinking message on the screen “CHECK FAN #2″. You may also notice that the cooling fan in the back of the set turns on but then stops.

Here’s the procedure from a reader (thanks Ernesto) who replaced this fan himself and told me about it.

First, the part number you need is as follows:

Fan #2 for the HLN4365WX (and other sets, see list below) is

bp31-00001a.jpg
Part Number: BP31-00001A
Description: LAMP FAN ASSY

Where to buy:
It costs about $40-45 on Partstore which is about $20 cheaper than elsewhere.

According to Partstore.com, it supports the following Samsung television models:
HLM4365WX, HLN4365W1X, HLN467WX, HLN507WX/XAA, HLM437WX, HLN4365W1X/XAA, HLN5065W, HLN617W1X, HLM5065W, HLN4365WX, HLN5065W1X, HLN617WX, HLM5065WX, HLN4365WX/XAA, HLN5065W1X/XAA, HLN617WX/XA, HLM507WX, HLN437W, HLN5065WX, HLN617WX/XAA, HLM617WS, HLN437W1X, HLN5065WX/XAA, HLP5674WX/XAA, HLM617WS/XAA, HLN437W1X/XAA, HLN507W1X, HLR4677WX/XAA, HLM617WX, HLN437WX, HLN507WX, HLR5677WX/XAA, HLN4365W, HLN467W

This may seem expensive for a fan, but it actually has electronics in it to maintain speed and temperture. And apparently it can cry for help.

Getting the fan out is not trivial, though no more difficult than replacing the color wheel. In fact, to take the set apart, you’ll wanto start with the process for replacing the color wheel.

Once you have the set open, you’ll find the fan as seen in this picture.

fan-no-2.jpg

There are two fans, and fan #2 is the larger one that is facing the back of the set. You can actually see it through the grates in the back of the set.

The fan itself is screwed into the black enclosure that can be seen in the above picture. It’s difficult to impossible to unscrew the fan from that enclosure without sliding out the whole part as if we were replacing the color wheel. Once you slide that out, you can unscrew the black box with the screws in this picture.

This will free the box so you can access the fan screws.

All in all, a bit less involved than replacing the color wheel. While you’re in here, you might want to locate the color wheel in case you do end up with that problem in the future.

Again, you can purchase the fan #2, part # BP31-00001A at Partstore.com.

Please comment here and let us know if you perform this procedure, and do fill us in on other details that may help others.

Hi Guys, I am electronically "challenged" but for the first time ever my HLN4365W is giving me a problem. Check Fan No 1 is flashing intermittently but increasingly often as of a few days ago. I am still on original bulb from when I bought the set 5 years ago. Incredible isn't it? Anyway I can see the fan which appears to be fan 2 in the photos above twitching. I tried to remove dust but it still is acting up.

1)Is it safe to go back there? I see a ton of warnings about shocks on the back of the panel. If I unplug does that even help me at all?

2)Is it only those 2 screws in the picture on the left of the black box holding the fan to remove that box? And then a few screws to get the fan out?

    Thanks

did you figure it out yet. I am about to start the same process with fan #2. I dont know what I am doing so wish me luck

It was a pain to change and I wasn't sure if I had done it right, but the TV works and I now have a bunch of screws that I am not going to put in.
  • Jangro....thanks for the guidance....have an HLN5065W with the message Check Fan No. 1...when I opened the back....fan #2 was out. Ordered the Part as stated above on Sunday and even with the Monday holiday came on Tuesday. Wrapped some duct tape around the fan as it was a bit smaller without the original padding on the old fan. Worked fine. Message is gone! Great post!

I just replaced fan number 2 on an HLS-5688W. The procedure is quite different from above, but the part is the same. Everything seemed to go smoothly, but now I think my power supply is going bad. TV comes on for approx 5 seconds then powers down completely.

I am having the same problem that Ryan has. I just looked at my TV and the label on the fan is faced in. Or torward the lamp tunnel. Hope that description helped. I am going to order my fans so I can fix my 2 TV's.

I have a HLS5086WX/XAA. Although it's not on the list the fan is indeed the same for Fan No 2.

It's daunting at first but really easy to get to Fan No 2. Follow the directions from the "replace the color wheel" link for how to remove the shroud.

Once you see the guts you'll notice there are 3 main "areas", left, center and right. The center area houses the lamp and Fan No 2. The center area is held in place by two screws at the bottom of the center guts area. Once removed, you can slide out the entire center area with lamp, fan no 2, etc. There are two items that must be disconnected in order for the center to slide out enough to work with. The first almost looks like something you'd hook up to your computer... like a printer or monitor cable. Unseat that and remove at least one end.

The other is on the right side. If my descriptions don't work for you, then simply try sliding out the center device slowly and carefully and simply detach the things that get in the way, it should be obvious.

Once the center trey is removed you'll see that Fan No 2 is in the back right. It is inside a plastic shroud. You'll need to remove it from it's power supply, simply follow the red/black/yellow wires to the source and unplug it. Unscrew the shroud from the base by unscrewing a handful of gold screws.

Now please note!!! This is something I didn't do and am hoping someone has an answer for me. I did not note the orientation of the fan. The fan I ordered hasn't arrived yet and I'm hoping someone can help me... but save yourself the time and trouble by noticing the orientation of the fan.

Ryan, iF you look carefully, on one of the side of the casing, there are arrows molded in the casing giving the direction of the airflow.

Hi there, I have an HLN5065W Samsung DLP - and recently I got the Check Fan #3 warning on the screen. So I opened up the back of the TV and noticed the small fan above the ballast card is actually working. I thought this was Fan #3. I noticed however the DLP Lamp Fan (the big one) isn't turning. It seems like it wants to turn but doesn't turn.

I thought the DLP Lamp Fan was Fan #2 but the error message says Fan #3. Could it be amistake? Should I order the fan for the DLP Lamp and replace it? What else can I do??
