Samsung DLP – How to Replace Fan #2

by Scott Jangro on 29 September 2006

You turn on your Samsung DLP and get a blinking message on the screen “CHECK FAN #2″. You may also notice that the cooling fan in the back of the set turns on but then stops.

Here’s the procedure from a reader (thanks Ernesto) who replaced this fan himself and told me about it.

First, the part number you need is as follows:

Fan #2 for the HLN4365WX (and other sets, see list below) is

bp31-00001a.jpg
Part Number: BP31-00001A
Description: LAMP FAN ASSY

Where to buy:
It costs about $40-45 on Partstore which is about $20 cheaper than elsewhere.

According to Partstore.com, it supports the following Samsung television models:
HLM4365WX, HLN4365W1X, HLN467WX, HLN507WX/XAA, HLM437WX, HLN4365W1X/XAA, HLN5065W, HLN617W1X, HLM5065W, HLN4365WX, HLN5065W1X, HLN617WX, HLM5065WX, HLN4365WX/XAA, HLN5065W1X/XAA, HLN617WX/XA, HLM507WX, HLN437W, HLN5065WX, HLN617WX/XAA, HLM617WS, HLN437W1X, HLN5065WX/XAA, HLP5674WX/XAA, HLM617WS/XAA, HLN437W1X/XAA, HLN507W1X, HLR4677WX/XAA, HLM617WX, HLN437WX, HLN507WX, HLR5677WX/XAA, HLN4365W, HLN467W

This may seem expensive for a fan, but it actually has electronics in it to maintain speed and temperture. And apparently it can cry for help.

Getting the fan out is not trivial, though no more difficult than replacing the color wheel. In fact, to take the set apart, you’ll wanto start with the process for replacing the color wheel.

Once you have the set open, you’ll find the fan as seen in this picture.

fan-no-2.jpg

There are two fans, and fan #2 is the larger one that is facing the back of the set. You can actually see it through the grates in the back of the set.

The fan itself is screwed into the black enclosure that can be seen in the above picture. It’s difficult to impossible to unscrew the fan from that enclosure without sliding out the whole part as if we were replacing the color wheel. Once you slide that out, you can unscrew the black box with the screws in this picture.

This will free the box so you can access the fan screws.

All in all, a bit less involved than replacing the color wheel. While you’re in here, you might want to locate the color wheel in case you do end up with that problem in the future.

Again, you can purchase the fan #2, part # BP31-00001A at Partstore.com.

Please comment here and let us know if you perform this procedure, and do fill us in on other details that may help others.

    "Help Please" Have HLN617WX

While replacing Color Wheel and cleaning out dust, I "Dumbly" removed to clean (4) sided mirror assembly (3/16 x 3/8 x 1 1/2 rectangle) between Color Wheel and Lens. Dried up glue feel apart. Can I glue back together, and what type glue? Are smaller mirror strips sandwiched between larger strips, or butt ended on larger strip edges?

Is it cheaper to buy new, and what is Part Name and Number?

    Information Appreciated,

I found this extremely helpful and your info encouraged me out of my comfort zone. There is only one issue that I encountered that was not covered here. Once I removed the old fan and put the new one in it was obvious that something was different. The old fan has a foam wrap around the outer edge that kept it secure in the housing. Without this wrap the new fan was too loose. The foam was glued on the old fan and I could not get it off so I had to improvise. I ended up using 1.5 Millimeter Craft Foam. I measured the foam by the width of the fan, cut it, and hot glued the wrap all along the outer edge of the fan. It was perfect. The fan slid in but was tight enough to not move in the housing.

Scott, I found article fantastic, however, I have a Samsung HL-S5687. I followed the instructions you listed, however, it wa a bit more difficult to get to fan two. I had to remove the lamp and slide out circuit board next to lamp to expose fan. I then had to remove screws holding chasis in place. Once fan is exposed, it quite simple to remove the first screw from the fan housing. However, when it comes to removing the second screw, it was a bit more difficult as you can't see the screw unless you have some type of a mirror, as this is an extremely small space and I really didn't know how far I could pull out chasis. Once I remove fan from housing it was pretty simple to complete the rest. Note, make sure you replace the rear panel before turning on you set as the fans will start, however, stop as there is a blue safety switch that must be activated by the back panel being in place. I found out the hard way. Once I replaced the fan I immediately tried testing the TV not realizing the safety factor. Had to spend an additional $13 to just ask for this info.

Hope this helps anyone who has this model
  • If you take out the 2 ( front screws ) to the plate on the bottom that the fan And bulb housing's screw down to, you can slide the full assembly with the fan housing out to where its pretty easy to get to the back 2 screws.
  • DLP out
same as myron and had to tape down (secure) the blue trip safety switch to get the TV to fire up, though still get the warning msg of check fan #1, though it works (spins). Repl. #2 fan (92mm) and still have problems. Guess its time to upgrade. Me, I've had the HLN507W 50" DLP since '04 so I guess I've gotten my $ worth. thinkin LED LCD to replace it. Also since DVI interface is out and HDMI is in, will have to replace some cables as well.

Hi Guys, I am electronically "challenged" but for the first time ever my HLN4365W is giving me a problem. Check Fan No 1 is flashing intermittently but increasingly often as of a few days ago. I am still on original bulb from when I bought the set 5 years ago. Incredible isn't it? Anyway I can see the fan which appears to be fan 2 in the photos above twitching. I tried to remove dust but it still is acting up.

1)Is it safe to go back there? I see a ton of warnings about shocks on the back of the panel. If I unplug does that even help me at all?

2)Is it only those 2 screws in the picture on the left of the black box holding the fan to remove that box? And then a few screws to get the fan out?

    Thanks

It was a pain to change and I wasn't sure if I had done it right, but the TV works and I now have a bunch of screws that I am not going to put in.
  • Jangro....thanks for the guidance....have an HLN5065W with the message Check Fan No. 1...when I opened the back....fan #2 was out. Ordered the Part as stated above on Sunday and even with the Monday holiday came on Tuesday. Wrapped some duct tape around the fan as it was a bit smaller without the original padding on the old fan. Worked fine. Message is gone! Great post!
