I’m Done with Blog Comment Systems. Finished. Kaput.

by Scott Jangro on 01 April 2009

scream.jpgI love the idea of blog comment systems. I used to love disqus and intensedebate, but I cannot say that any longer.

Whether it’s out of control spam, incompatibilities with themes, poor comment management, lost comments, and now duplicate comments, they’ve pushed me away.

I’m like a beaten spouse that keeps going back for more.

I just got through reviewing several hundred comments, removing spam that got through, and cleaning up hundreds of duplicate comments (there are still thousands to go through).

I’ve had it. No more. I want a divorce.

It’s back to the plain old Wordpress comments bachelor pad for me.

  • Dont give up. http://mymumbaicity.com and http://mymumbaicity.wordpress.com also use these systems. But if you check out the websites, you can control it quite easily. Its all a matter of plugins mate.

  • Hey Scott,

I’m new to your blog but after doing some research on social medical and affiliate marketing I saw the words Random Geekery so I had no choice but to click through and see what was being discussed. I am glad I did because I like what I sees so far!

When looking at your home page I saw this post and because I have been where you are at I had to at least say I feel your pain, deeply!!! I used to be a fan of Disqus but my readers used to complain about it being very slow and most of the time they were getting errors so I had to let them go and started using Akismet on Tuesday (so far no complaints).
  • I tried FastBlogFinder for a while and it worked awfully, I'll try disqus since it seems to have been the favorite. I'm still not ready to stop behaving like a beaten spouse.
  • I guess I am not the only one then. I did consider going back to Disqus. I have been "sucked" into Facebook lately and since Disqus has Facebook Connect thing integrated, I thought to give it a spin, but quickly became disappointed how it slows down my blogs.

I am done with them as well.
  • Dang, so I am stuck unless I get a modification for my custom theme.

Now if only you had the Subscribe to Comments or a similar plugin, so I would have known there were comments after mine. ;)
  • Fine but I am taking half, I was with you when you were nothing!
  • Actually Shawn, as of WP 2.7, it supports nested comments natively. You just need a theme that supports nested comments. Thesis has been promising it, but I don't think it's coming in 2.5.

My old theme here doesn't support it. I need to fix that.

The thing that I think I'll miss the most is easy email alerts for people, though there are plugins for that.
